A passion for textiles! My mother was the most wonderful seamstress. I think I had my first taste of fabric as a school girl going to Centrepoint Farbics on Queen Street looking for satin for the ball dress mum was making for me. I came into a world that I felt very comfortable in, I viewed my first bit of sparkley gold sequins and deep soft velvet and I was hooked!
I started working for Martin Hughes Design straight out of AIT, and I remember seeing all the reps coming in with amazing and wonderful fabrics. I knew then that I wanted to be involved in the design/textiles/architecture trade.
Once returning from my O.E my first job in Auckland was working in the showroom at Mokum Textiles. I then wanted to go out on the road selling for Mokum, as I loved the travel and seeing all the different Designers and Retailers in their own space. After three years on the road, I was offered the job as Sales Manager for Mokum which was a huge learning curve being more on the Management side of the business. I really saw the 'nuts and bolts' of a large wholesale company and I had the most amazing opportunities of travelling overseas and meeting Tricia Guild, Peter Osbourne and Nina Campbell in London.
I then needed a bit of a break from packing a suitcase so I had six months off and then came back to work for Icon Textiles for two years ending up as Sales and Marketing Manager. I still worked part time through having the children, but when number three came along I gave up work to be a stay at home mother for the last four years and now I am very proud to take over Jill Tuck Designers Cushions and Soft Furnishings.
The business offers a cut, make and trim service. Custom decorative cushions can normally be delivered within a week of receiving fabric. Designers are welcome to bring their clients to the showroom or take cushions to clients on approval making sure to get just the right look to fit in with their interior design ideas.
